A flourishing centre of Buddhism in South India during the medieval period was Nagapattinam, near Madras on the east coast of India. A colony of the Malaya Buddhists settled there who erected two temples in the 11th Century A.D patronized by the Chola kings. Nagapattinum was a place of piligrimage for Buddhists and its bronzes are some of the finest metal works of South India. In this piece, Buddha is represented making the gesture dispeling fear (abhya mudra) with the right hand and the gift-bestowing gesture (varada mudra) with the left.
