The Tathagata displays the hand gestures of supreme enlightenment (bodhyagri mudra) and is seated on a lotus pedestal in the yogic meditation posture (vajraparyankasana), and adorned with regal jewellery. The tall crown and towering chignon (jatamukuta) topped with a flaming jewel (ratna) recall the eastern Indian Pala period (8th-12th c) traditions that influenced the central Tibetan styles up to around the fourteenth century: cf. the fourteenth century central Tibetan Vairochana in the Berti Aschmann Collection at Rietberg Museum, in Uhlig, On the Path to Enlightenment, Zürich, 1995, cat. no. 25. Vairochana is regarded as a universal aspect of the Buddha and is the central figure of the Five Tathagatas, the meditation Buddhas.
