A gilt copper alloy figure of Manjushri Namasangiti
Nepal, 15th century
Heavily cast with a well-defined lotus platform and elaborate jewelry set for large stone inlays, including a necklace, armbands and swags suspended from a belt at the back with a silver inlaid urna.
8 1/2 in. (21.5 cm) high
This figure's angular face, high forehead, and broad narrow eyes are conventions of Nepalese craftsmanship in the 14th and 15th century. Compare the treatment of the necklace with a Shadaksari in the British Museum (1956.12.-10.2) published in von Schroeder, Indo-Tibetan Bronzes, Hong Kong, 1981, no. 95C. Also compare two similarly published Amoghapasas (ibid., pp. 358 & 361, nos. 95E & 96F).
The thick casting and broad-layered lotus petals are indicative works associated with the Densatil monastery. The present bronze's prominent lower lip is a featured also shared among a Amoghasiddhi and Akshobhya held in the The Berti Aschmann Foundation Collection, see Uhlig, On a Path to Enlightenment, Zurich, 1995, pp. 74-5. Compare also to a Buddha sold at Bonhams, New York, 17 March 17 2014, lot 16.
