This image of Lokeshvara is unusual for having six arms rather than four or eight as is far more common. Multi-armed forms of Buddhist deities are often associated with tantric, or esoteric, practice, and they tend to represent specific teachings. Esoteric Buddhism, known in Sanskrit as Vajrayana, offers alternate paths to enlightenment that are appropriate only if one has had the proper training.
