象牙雕观音菩萨像，尼泊尔风格，年代不详，可能为18世纪，尼泊尔或西藏。

象牙雕菩萨立像。发髻繁复，上饰三叶冠。戴方形重耳珰。上身袒露。腰系刻划规整的罗裙。一条宽带束于腰间，左手下压带饰。右前臂缺失。

此像属于一组小型造像之一，这类造像材质包括象牙、木质，至少有一例为铜质。这尊象牙造像的身份尚难完全确定，但同组其他多例像冠中均雕有无量光佛（阿弥陀佛），从而确认其为观音菩萨（Avalokiteshvara）。所有已知实例在细节上都惊人地一致，表明它们遵循了共同的模板。有学者提出，其原型可能即是拉萨布达拉宫内那尊著名的尼泊尔风格木雕观音像。至于这尊象牙造像究竟是西藏还是尼泊尔所制，目前仍存疑。

Standing figure of Bodhisattva, carved in ivory. A three-leafed crown fronts the elaborately-arranged coiffure. Heavy earrings of square section. Upper body nude. From the girdle hangs a conventionally rendered skirt. A broad sash is round the loins, pressed down by the left hand. The right forearm is missing.

This figure is one of a small group of smaller images, in ivory, wood and , in at least one instance, bronze. It is not possible to identify this ivory securely, but a number of other examples have an image of Amitabha in their crowns, establishing their identity as Avalokitesvara. All of the known examples are remarkably close in every detail, indicating that they follow a common model. It has been suggested that this may be the famous wooden Nepalese Avalokitesvara in the Potala Palace in Lhasa. Whether this ivory example was produced in Tibet or Nepal remoins problematic.

Examples of this type of archaic image are found all over Tibet. They are probably later copies of a 7th-century Nepalese original now enshrined in one of the oldest chapels in the Potala Palace in Lhasa. The original image was so highly venerated that small copies like this were made for private use. Ivory, Tibet or Nepal, Museum no. IM.382-1914
