Description

A cast bronze figure of Buddha, walking forward in abhaya mudra, the gesture of dispelling fear. The Buddha's right hand is raised, and his left foot has almost left the ground.

Images in the history of Buddhist art have expressed the accessibility of the Buddha to the devotee by appearing to move towards him, and narrative scenes have also shown a Buddha in movement, but the three-dimensional walking Buddha is the invention of the Sukhothai metal sculptors. Its direct precursor lies in such narrative representations as the descent from the heaven of the Thirty-three Gods, found in stucco reliefs at Sukhothai; the partly three-quarter view was adapted for frontal representation in the round. The Buddha's right hand is here raised in reassurance, and his left foot has almost left the ground. The style of this image is close to the Khmer tradition as represented in the formative stages of the Ayutthaya style.
