Gilt copper Buddha Shakyamuni with inset stones

Nepal, Early Malla Period (c. 1200-1482)

14th/15th century

尼泊爾 十四/十五世紀 鎏銅合金佛坐像

represented as a universal monarch according to the ancient Indian concept of spiritual sovereignty (chakravartin), wearing a regal crown in recognition of his Enlightenment. The familiar seated meditation posture (vajraparyankasana) with the right hand reaching forward (bhumisparsha mudra) recalls the moment that Shakyamuni called the earth goddess to witness his right to enlightenment, having resisted the demon Mara’s attempts to dissuade him of his worthiness to achieve such a lofty goal.

Height 32 cm, 12½ in.

The Buddha is modelled with broad shoulders and attenuated waist, wearing a diaphanous robe with incised floral and geometric patterns on the hem, and a jewelled pendant extending from the elegant folds of cloth at the shoulder: cf. this typically Nepalese attribute of a jewelled pendant on a thirteenth or fourteenth century Buddha from the Tuyet Nguyet and Stephen Markbreiter Collection at Sotheby’s Hong Kong, May 21, 2021, lot 103. The rounded face exudes a sense of meditative calm with narrowed downcast eyes, a finely modelled aquiline nose and full, almost smiling lips. The sculpture is quintessentially Nepalese, styled by a Newar artist, cast in pure copper, and richly gilded: cf. the sensitive modelling of face and hands and the powerful physique of the renowned Nepalese Early Malla period gilt copper standing Buddha, in J. Casey, N. M. Ahuja, D. Weldon, Divine Presence, 2003, cat. 39. The gilding is now rubbed in places from handling over centuries, revealing the warm tones of patinated copper beneath. The statue is cast in one without an integral pedestal, as is common practice in Nepal. A locating tang cast into the rim at the back of the statue would have facilitated its placement on a separate lotus base or within a shrine.
