This monumental and exceptional wood head, representing the Bodhisattva of Compassion and Mercy, exquisitely carved in the round, skillfully captures the serenity of Avalokitesvara and exemplifies the zenith of Chinese Buddhist sculpture. The visage features full, rounded cheeks and downcast eyes adorned with luminous black glass pupils, which have remarkably retained their original luster, evoking a deep sense of compassion and introspection. The elegantly arched brows curve gracefully like crescent moons above a central forehead indentation that originally accommodated a jewelled urna. The lips are full and gently pursed, while the pendulous ears are proportionately framed according to canonical standards. The hair is intricately styled in an elaborate, towering chignon that evokes the form of swirling clouds.
The state of preservation of this piece is remarkable; the sculptural volume of the face retains a powerful definition, with sharp carving marks still discernible. The weathered surface exhibits a jade-like smoothness, while the wood grain, exposed through the loss of original pigment over time, flows with a natural rhythm, showcasing a unique beauty in its unembellished form.
Measuring over 60 cm, the scale of this head is striking. If it had belonged to a complete standing figure, the statue would have achieved a monumental size suitable for a temple hall of significant stature. Even in its current fragmentary condition, its grand scale and exceptional preservation serve as a testament to the remarkable achievements of Northern Song Buddhist art.
This imposing head, with its majestic height, masterfully embodies the vigorous aesthetic of Song dynasty Jinbei sculpture. Its artistic characteristics find compelling parallels in major museum collections: the fullness of the face and the treatment of the chignon are virtually identical to those seen in an 11th-12th century wood figure of Guanyin (94 cm high, Museum Acc. no. 98.62a-h) in the Minneapolis Institute of Art. Furthermore, the facial structure and hairstyle closely resemble those of a Northern Song wood figure of Manjushri (109.2 cm high, Museum Acc. no. 42.25.5) and a Northern Song polychrome wood figure of Guanyin (94 cm high, Museum Acc. no. 33.116), both in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The serene spiritual resonance of the features also resonates deeply with a Jin dynasty wood figure of Guanyin (172.7 cm high, Museum Acc. no. EA1982.2) in the Ashmolean Museum.
Compare also a Song dynasty large carved wood figure of Avalokiteshvara, sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 8 October 2013, lot 3074; and a highly important and large wood figure of Guanyin from North China, dated to the 13th century, sold at Christie's New York, 19 December 2012, lot 177.
Saleroom notices
