Description

Buddha seated on the royal lion-throne with a double lotus base, against a throne-back with a bold cross-bar separating it from the halo and the bent shaft for the missing parasol. On the sides of the throne-back are superbly modelled leogryphs mounted on elephants, a regular Indian combination. Made of silver inlaid bronze.

This Buddha is close to the stone figures of Borobudur and an excellent example of metal images in the eastern Indian tradition followed in Java. The Buddha sits on the royal lion-throne with a double lotus base, against a throne-back with a bold cross-bar separating it from the halo and the bent shaft for the missing parasol. On the sides of the throne-back are superbly modelled leogryphs mounted on elephants, a regular Indian combination. Above the cross-bar, flanking the halo, are ‘makara’ heads, and radiating from the pearled border of the halo is the distinctively Javanese flame surround, longer and more spaced than the Indian prototypes. The rectangle cut into the halo may have contained a lost replacement patch since the backplate in general shows casting faults.

Register says:

Bronze figure of Buddha Sakyamuni seated in witness attitude, right hand over knee, with back of the hand outwards. On oval lotus throne with oblong base, with four grotesque lions as supporters of base. Nimbus screen at back with flame border, rampant lions standing on the heads of elephants at the sides. Spike at the top which once supported an umbrella (now missing), as shwon in the plate. Found near Mountain Dieng or Prahu.
