Despite its missing head, hand, and feet, we can tell this is an image of the Buddha. His smooth body, framed by transparent drapery, resembles other Buddha sculptures from the Sarnath area in northern India, made around 400–500. Under the rule of the powerful Gupta dynasty (c. 300–c. 550) at this time, artists developed a distinctive image type for the Buddha. Just as we see here, the body was idealized and smooth, showing neither bones nor muscles. And its surface was covered by clinging, transparent drapery that falls in a deep fold on either side framing his body. This way of portraying the Buddha is made all the more powerful by its subtlety, soft lines and restrained decoration.
