A figure of Avalokiteśvara (Padmapāni) seated on a lotus with one foot pendant, his left hand in varadamudrā, his right at his hip holding a lotus stem, the flower at this shoulder. Cast in a copper alloy; inscribed.

莲花手观音像，半跏趺坐于莲台，一足下垂；左手下垂施与愿印，右手置胯间持莲茎，莲开于肩侧。铜合金铸造，带铭文。

The collection made in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) by Hugh Nevill (1847-97) was divided between two sequences: 1898,0702.1 to 197 (religious objects, which were entered in the Antiquities Register); and 1898,0703.1 to 1719 (ethnographic objects - many have As prefixes added later). The two collections were purchased together in 1898 for £150 from his son, Ralph Nevill.

NB There is a separate sequence As1898,0702.1 to 95. This is of Siberian objects, given by H H Howorth, and has nothing to do with the Nevill collection.
