The ancient domain known as Gandhara, located in modern-day Pakistan and Afghanistan, was settled by merchants of Mediterranean ancestry, some of whom converted to Buddhism. Early Buddha images from Gandhara differ dramatically from those made at the same time in the region that is now India. They have features derived from Greek and Roman sculpture, including wavy hair and long, straight noses.
